Its softly tapered, triangular form referencing the geometry of a guitar pick, allows two complete stools to be CNC-cut from a single standard sheet of plywood, with minimal material waste. This enables on-demand production using widely accessible tools and materials, supporting decentralised manufacturing models that prioritise local resources and reduce the environmental impact of global logistics. While originally designed for local fabrication rather than mass distribution, Pik’s disassembled format naturally lends itself to compact packaging. All parts fit into a flat box slim enough to pass through a standard UK letterbox, offering a logistical advantage that many products overlook. In conventional shipping, bulky, pre-assembled goods often occupy excessive volume, with packaging composed largely of empty space and protective filler. Pik challenges this inefficiency by demonstrating how design for disassembly and flat-packing can significantly reduce shipping volume, allowing more units to be transported per route, with fewer resources consumed. Rather than positioning itself as a reinvention of the stool, Pik is a considered reflection on how design can engage with systems, material supply, production methods, packaging, and distribution, with subtlety and intention. By reclaiming oyster shells from local restaurants, Ostra prevents these resources from reaching landfills and instead gives them new life in a striking, sustainable lamp design, a testament to the material’s potential. Oyster shells, rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), typically end up polluting coastlines and emitting unpleasant odors as they decompose. While cement production, accounting for 8% of global emissions, relies on mining non-renewable limestone for calcium carbonate, Ostra offers a renewable, low-impact alternative. This biomaterial mimics the natural formation of oyster shells through Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP), a process that binds shell powder with a custom seaweed extract. The result is a recyclable, biodegradable composite with the density and versatility of concrete, yet without emmissions. His practice spans products, systems, technologies, processes, and materials. He often navigates the space between research and design through an interdisciplinary approach, crafting solutions that are both pragmatic and visionary, and aimed at addressing the urgent challenges of our time. No challenge exists in isolation. Designing for meaningful impact requires thinking in systems, engaging across disciplines, and collaborating with experts whose knowledge extends well beyond design. In his practice, he works closely with researchers, advisors, and specialists, from science and engineering to materials and sustainability, bringing in diverse perspectives that inform, challenge, and deepen the design process. His work is grounded in experimentation and creative inquiry, bridging technology, material innovation, and sustainability. Designed to endure across time and context, his projects span the immediate, the imminent, and the distant future, with a focus on long-term relevance and environmental impact. Markos established his own design studio following the completion of his MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art in 2024. He holds previous degrees from EINA in Barcelona and the University of Brighton. Alongside his design practice, he contributes academically as a visiting lecturer at universities, including the Royal College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, University of Dundee, and Cyprus University of Technology.&nbsp; He is also part of an interdisciplinary research team, collaborating with scientists, engineers, designers, and makers from the Royal College of Art, the Materials Science Research Centre, and Imperial College London to explore new material systems and rethink the future of design. His work has been exhibited internationally in cities including Milan, London, Dubai, Eindhoven, and Munich, and he has collaborated with a range of renowned studios, clients, and institutions. <img Precision-cut aluminum rings add both elegance and strength, while the steel tubes provide durability, maintaining a balance of lightness and stability.&nbsp; The design’s minimalist aesthetic is complemented by an innovative aluminum component, which allows the shelf to be effortlessly mounted at any interval along the steel tubes. This solution offers a seamless, intuitive, and secure method of installation, enhancing the overall simplicity and functionality of the shelf. As part of my thesis, this field was carefully investigated through medical, biological and scientific research papers as well as with noumerous hands-on experiments and tests.&nbsp;The inevitable future of design. Using green chemistry principles and local materials that are naturally abundant in the form of waste, their potential was examined and analysed&nbsp;in sustainable and circular product design.&nbsp; This research was followed by multiple workshops and collaborations organized with different universities and studios in London, Brighton and Cyprus, where design students and proffessors participated, etiher by developing projects or being introduced to concepts like ‘Design from Waste, Circular Economy and Distributed Design’, with the objective of minimizing environmental and social impact through design.
